It does not have to be a full featured plugin for 3dsmax. Just a modifier that can be placed on multiple objects anywhere in the stack. It should have an export button to export the 'collapsed' meshes from that point in the stack. And a re-import button to re-import the UVW's from the FBX back into 3dsmax. Unfold 3D can be used manually to unwrap the objects. This is especially handy for quick auto unwrapping (Seams, unfold and packing). This would make using unfold 3D with 3dsmax much more useful because the modifier stack can stay modifiable and instanced objects are unwrapped and other transformations are also still valid.
