I am presently working with 2 million triangle mesh, it is split into 21 parts to begin with. Shapes are mostly flat or curved(half cylinder like), others are more complicated wooden carvings(but rectangular shaped bounds/blocks).
Like with request in other feature for grid/subdivide method, this is similar kind. The tool would let you draw a line in screen space, then when applied(eg mouse release), triangles this line intersects would be selected, and edge path of connected triangles would be made as a seam that can be cut. If I have several long islands that are aligned/packed together in UV space, I could draw a line through all of them, and each island would get a weld line across the line that was drawn.
While I have many similar shapes, the topology/triangles is different, so the select similar does not seem to work here. It'd be interesting if one could clone a seam line and move that in 3D space(like 3D Coat gizmo for transformations) and apply this technique in similar fashion(nearest point/normal to edges?) but in 3D space(3D Coat has a curve tool with snapping that can do this sort of thing if you'd like to see ways to use it for interface).

When you say "line" ? You mean a simple straight line ? Or a curved one, composed described by several points ?

When implementing the feature it should be possible to further support multiple point/segmented lines with curves(adjustable or not like in 3dcoat) or polygonal lines like the lasso tool can create.
