Thanks for this answer Jim.
It's like a fight to get a good polygon mesh from CAD. We need to do tutorials for this.
BTW we already started to investigate on the "Optimize mesh", which basically -If I well understood- weld vertices that are on the same coordinates so that there is are no unwanted seams after import.

I finally had another look at this, with the most recent version, and these are the steps which worked for me: 1. Load FBX file, ensure there are no orange seams. 2. 3D window > turn on Viewport Polygon+Wireframe mode. 3. Switch to Primitive Edge mode. Select Auto Select Sharp Edges. Click Auto Select Edges. 4. Press C (cut). This will divide the object into islands. 5. Hover mouse over the area you want to unfold, press U (unfold). 6. Toggle Flats to only show the unfolded island. 7. 3D window > select Viewport Texture Grid and UV Tile > Fit. 8. Switch to Primitive Polygon mode. Turn on Magic Wand > Edge. Set Max Edge Angle to 1.5 and Smoothing to 0. Select the polygon area which should have zero distortion (the prettiest area). 9. UV window > select Viewport No Texture to clearly see the selected area. 10. Unwrap > turn on Free Selection Limit. Turn on Fill Holes to prevent extreme distortion in some areas, otherwise it’s best to leave this off to ensure less distortion close to the pretty area. Set Optimize Iteration Number to 10. Click Optimize 3 times. 11. Press Ctrl+I to invert selection. Turn off Free Selection Limit. Click Optimize 1 time. 12. 3D window > select Viewport Polygon mode. Check that the texture looks perfect. 13. Save.
