Would it be possible to do a rough auto seam and unwrap, and bake a texture(grayscale and baked externally) that could be loaded in to mask/select verts/faces for features like protect or influencing auto seams cuts and islands?

A youtube user asked exactly the same things Yes that is possible, but that's require some work. What kind of map would you produce in that external software AO / Curvature, something else ?

Ah, yes that user(polarathene) is also me. I hope others would see value in this feature request too though! I am thinking for this fireplace example asset that a heavily decimated version that blocks out the shape could bake/transfer curvature or AO to guide autoseams for the big planar like shapes. I can investigate what sort of maps might help isolate the decorative details to better control how they're autoseamed. It would be great if this technique can lead to smarter automated unwraps for such meshes Another kind of map input could behave like disto control or variable force setting which helps guide autoseams where to do fewer cuts or pelts etc.

Kwhali
the 0.10.41 introduce "Ignore Details" feature in the "Auto Select Edges" panel. If you activate it, Mosaic and Hierarchical edge selection tools will give less attention to mesh details. You can also use the protect map to tell where you don't want details be selected.
Hope you will like it and tell us if it improved things as you wish.
thanks !

Kwhali the 0.10.41 introduce "Ignore Details" feature in the "Auto Select Edges" panel. Hi Remi! Thanks I'll give it a go I've had some more experience with Unfold3D and will provide more feedback on the program and suggestions where it can improve(few more features/challenges for you ). I must say I am really impressed with this software, I look forward to buying license in future!
