matching the texel size from one shell to another and across udim tiles is great. but i was thinking, what if you say had multiple seperate assets (a city of buildings for example) and wanted to match the uv scale across all the buildings but wanted to keep them seperate. This could be useful for procedural texturing where you wanted to keep the size of a brick texture the same over all the buildings. Could we get a numerical representation of the texel scale for selected shell island or face etc.? (a bit like maya 2018) get and set size.

Yes, that is possible, we can put a text display somewhere of the value of an average of the texel density of all involved polygons in the current selection.
1 - would it answer to your need ?
2 - should we use the texture map resolution in the computation of the texel density, of should I use only the ratio UVPolyArea/3DPolyArea without taking account the texture map size (look at the panel named "Layout", there is a parameter Map Size).

1. yes, so we could select a group of polys. 'get' texel density value and then select other polys and 'set' value based on stored numerical value from previous selection. could also work both ways? say if you know you wanted a value of 50, then select polys and apply? so its not driven by 'previous selection' 2. hmm i think it would be just based on the ratio maybe? not something i have tested in maya yet. i will try change the map resolution and see if affects the texel value with the same polys selected. at a guess the ratio is the most important to keep consistency across assets

I too would like to second this request. The ability to get density from one model and to set to others would be invaluable!

okay.
I see a panel Density with a button "Pick" (like the color picker / eye dropper in photoshop), that will set the average density of the current islands seletcion into a numerical entry, then a "Set" button that will set the density that is in the numerical entry to the selected islands.
